Gendered cities: Studying urban gender bias through street names

This paper uses text analysis to measure gender bias in cities through the use of street names. Focusing on case Spain, we collect data 15 million names analyze inequality urban toponyms. We calculate for each Spanish municipality and year from 2001 2020 a variable measuring percentage streets with female over total number male Our results reveal strong imbalance cities: named after women is only 12% 2020. also observe substantial intra-urban differences, being relatively scarcer town centers. Concerning new streets, lower but still far parity. The second part analyzes correlation our indicator variables related attitudes values, suggesting that it constitutes useful cultural equality at city level. study thus helps relevant phenomenon, given symbolic power attributed names, which has been elusive quantify so far.
